Henry Emerson Etheridge was born in Currituck County, North Carolina on September 22, 1819, the third son of nine children born to Thomas and Elizabeth Etheridge. He was reared in the mountains of North Carolina, coming from a sturdy race of people that fought in the American Revolution. Emerson came to love his country and what it stood for. It has been said that if any one thing, “more than another,” was his distinguishing attribute, “it was his patriotism, and it was for his country that he did the most valiant services of his eventful life.
